Dear Members of the Korean Society of Heart Failure (KSHF)

The Korean Society of Heart Failure, founded as a research organization in 2003 and transitioned to the Society of Heart Failure in 2018, celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023.

Now it is time to take the next leap. Over the years, we have been positively influenced by the American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology, and we are now playing a pathfinder role in various exchanges with heart failure societies in the US, Europe, Japan, China, etc. In the field of heart failure, visionaries have opened up new worlds with their insights and imagination, based on scientific proof. The role of the young physician (researcher) needs to be different. The most important attitude for creation includes passion and immersion, which are accompanied by numerous failures. As long as there is transparency about the process, the role of pioneers is to provide new opportunities, recognize diversity, and be tolerant of many failures.

As our knowledge evolved, the distinction between knowing and not knowing became more important. Empiricism, as a scientific methodology, emphasizes that without a priori hypotheses, new discoveries are logically impossible, as Hume and Kant argued in their books "A Treatise of Human Nature" and "Critic of Pure Reason.” In other words, hypotheses require imagination and transcendent reason to formulate, which involve error.

Darwin's "Origin of Species" is "one long argument" for the question of how complex organs and instincts can arise from simple cells. The argument is that the current complexity of species is the result of the diversity and dynamic competition of life in the past. Darwin was 27 when he completed his expedition and left the Beagle, and he needed 23 years of time for further exploration. In 1905, Hilbert published 23 problems of mathematics in Paris, which led Gödel to prove the "incompleteness theorem," a keystone of computer logic, which was an applied extension of the concept of Cantor's "diagonal method." The concepts of mathematics that were only in our heads were implemented on computers by Turing, and now CHAT-GPT, a type of AI, has evolved to reach "the singularity."

New scientific discoveries are revolutionary, and discarding geocentrism in favor of heliocentrism requires a change in beliefs, not just a change in knowledge. Thomas Kuhn's concepts of "paradigm shift" and "incommensurability" and Schumpeter's "creative destruction" mean that new concepts cannot be explained by existing concepts and require revolutionary change. Perhaps, the new reality is in the hands of those armed with new concepts after all. Moving away from nepotism, toward diversity and fair competition, and toward beliefs based on scientific methodology rather than dogma, is only possible with academic freedom and the conscience to base one's beliefs on scientific hypotheses and evidence and to dismiss them when evidence to the contrary is found by anyone, anytime, anywhere.

The grand, leading principle, towards which every argument unfolded in these pages directly converges, is the absolute and essential importance of human development in its richest diversity.” Wilhelm von Humboldt, The Sphere and Duties of Government (cited as epigraph to J.S. Mill, On Liberty, 1859; cited on last page of The Constitution of Liberty by F.A. Hayek, 1960)

We are looking forward to the next chapter of the Korean Society of Heart Failure and hope that many people with passion and conviction will join us.

Greetings of the President

president of KSHF

Dear Members of the Korean Society of Heart Failure (KSHF)

This is Byung Su Yoo of Yonsei University Wonju College of Medicine, elected as the President at the Korean Society of Heart Failure starting in March 2024.

First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude and consider it a great honor to the members of the Korean Society of Heart Failure, a society with 20 years of tradition and development, for giving me the opportunity to serve as the President of KSHF.
It has been 21 years since it started as the Korean Heart Failure Study Group under the Korean Society of Cardiology and evolved into the Korean Society of Heart Failure. I believe that the efforts of the various advisors and dedicated Board members, especially the former president, Seok Min Kang, have greatly contributed to the consolidation of KSHF. On behalf of our members, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you.

I will be leading KSHF's key agenda (KSHF) for the next three years at a critical time when we need to take a leap forward. In particular, we will take it to the next level while continuing the successful work of our previous Board members.

The first is to further develop academic activities and research, which falls under K for Knowledge. We will inherit HF Seoul and its many academic activities as an international society and endeavor to establish it as a stronger and more prominent society of heart failure in Asia. Particularly in research, we will have the necessary research systems in place to better support registry-based RCTs to further develop the registries we have been working on, new large-scale RCTs, bid data research, policy research, and research conducted by each study group (digital, advanced heart failure, genomic, etc.). We hope that these efforts will lead to practical and good results, so that heart failure research in Korea can move to the next level.

The second is to contribute to society, which falls under S for Social Contribution). The previous heart failure awareness and public outreach projects have been successful, and we will not only inherit them but also promote volunteer activities that contribute to society both domestically and internationally, educational projects for patients, and public relations activities using various media. In addition, we aim to promote heart failure physician training and Asian heart failure physician training projects in line with our international status.

The third is to expand exchanges through harmony and cooperation with multidisciplinary, other societies, and international societies, which falls under H for Harmony. The active exchanges so far have played a crucial role for KSHF internationally. We will further solidify and expand our research collaborations, especially with the Korea National Institute of Health, the National Health Insurance Service, and Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service.

The fourth is to run KSHF to strengthen the foundation, which falls under F for Foundation & Fundamental. For many societies, one of the most important things is to stay true to the fundamentals of the society and engage members. We are committed to providing specialized training programs for our members to develop them into true heart failure specialists, and we will continue to seek to improve the quality of heart failure care in hospitals, especially by engaging and educating younger heart failure physicians and providing them with opportunities to work for KSHF. In carrying out such tasks, KSHF will actively engage with its members.

Dear members, KSHF is now at an important time as a young society becomes more active and takes on more responsibilities. I look forward to working with Chairperson of Council Daegyun Park and the members of the Board of Directors to strengthen the foundation of KSHF and develop it further, laying the groundwork for breakthroughs in the mid- to long-term.

We will strive to become "the Korean Society of Heart Failure, which makes great leaps higher, deeper, and wider.” We hope you'll support our efforts, join us, and occasionally criticize us.
We wish you and your family the best of health and happiness in the new year of 2024.

March, 2024
ByungSu Yoo, President
